Mazda 626 Cooling Fan Assembly Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
What does the electric cooling fan system include and how does Cooling Fan Assembly and Cooling Fan Relay operate on Mazda 626?
    A:
The Electric Cooling Fan System consists of fan motor assembly and blades which is mounted in cowling attached to the Radiator, fan relay on left inner fender panel and thermo switch in thermostat housing. When the temperature of the coolant in the thermostat shell reaches 206.6 °F (97 °C), the thermo-switch opens, thus allowing an electric current to pass through the relay which forwards the signal to activate the fan motor. On the contrary, when the temperature drops below 194 °F (90 °C), the switch closes which stops the fan motor. To check the fan motor, follow the wire down to the connector and separate it. Now using an ammeter and battery, check if the motor works on specified current. If not, replace it. For the fan relay, disconnect the connector to the water thermo switch and check whether the fan runs with the ignition switch on, then check for loose connections or a blown fuse, and replace the relay if necessary. Avoid disconnecting the thermo switch with the ignition switched on because the fan will come on automatically. Simply disconnect the connector and remove the switch. Place the switch in hot water to check for continuity to see if it is working alright. When reinstalling, make sure that the O-ring is fitted correctly and will not leak.
  • Q:
How to access and remove the Cooling Fan Assembly from the radiator on Mazda 626?
    A:
Removal and replacement of distributor and air cleaner assembly intake tube and unplugging of fan connector are needed to allow access. Add the coolant until it is below the upper Radiator hose and drains by removing the drain plug at the bottom of the radiator then takes off the upper radiator hose. The following step is to loosen the retaining bolts and pull out the fan motor and cowling assembly out of the radiator. The opposite of removal is installation. Lastly, fill radiator to appropriate level, hook on negative battery cable and confirm that everything is working as the engine heats up to working temperature.
