Mazda 626 EGR Valve
The Mazda 626 EGR Valve reduces heat during the combustion process, and thus the engine emits far fewer nitrogen oxides that form smog. It accomplishes this by recirculating a controlled amount of applied exhaust into the intake manifold, diluting the fresh air fuel mixture, and robbing the engine of oxygen that would otherwise elevate its temperatures to over 2500 degrees Fahrenheit. Nitrogen molecules that bind with oxygen are reduced when temperatures are lower, reducing NOx and decreasing the possibility of knock. The initial Mazda models applied a vacuum diaphragm style of the EGR Valve, which opened as the vacuum in the port increased and a thermal switch indicated conditions were safe, thus operation was very easy, but purely mechanical. With the tightening of emission regulations, Mazda introduced computer control that allowed the powertrain unit to control the valve by opening it with solenoids or miniature electric motors and checking the pressure or position with sensors, a change that provided a more acute response at cruise, with the valve closed at idle, cold start, or wide open throttle. Backpressure-sensitive vacuum units, pulse-width-modulated electronic valves, and fully digital linear valves have each been introduced across various 626 production years, with the primary difference being the way the pintle inside reacts to load and the manner in which the system checks the proper flow.
