Mazda 626 Exhaust Valve Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
How to properly remove and reinstall the camshaft cover while checking Exhaust Valve and Intake Valve clearances and ensuring proper engine operation on Mazda 626?
    A:
To get the engine up to regular operating temperature, run the engine and stop it afterwards. It is now time to remove the air cleaner assembly after labelling all the hoses and electrical wiring for easier fix-up later. Remove the PCV Valve and the Spark Plug Wire mount from the camshaft cover, tying the throttle cable out of the way with a piece of wire. Remove the bolts and washers from the camshaft cover. Use a rag and a large screwdriver to pry the camshaft cover up that you can lift the cover and gasket off together. To locate top dead center of the compression stroke of number 1 piston, number the spark plug wires and remove all the spark plugs. Then trace the number 1 cylinder's spark plug wire back to the distributor and mark the distributor body. Rotate the engine in a clockwise direction until the notch on the crankshaft pulley aligns with the pointer and the rotor points at the number 1 mark. If the rotor does not align with number 1, turn the crankshaft in the same direction through an additional complete revolution. Use a feeler gauge between each identified valve's stem and the rocker arm to check clearances. If clearances are incorrect, appropriately adjust the valve clearances until they meet specifications for the No. 1 intake, No. 1 exhaust, No. 2 intake, and No. 3 exhaust valves. Upon completing these adjustments, turn the crankshaft one complete turn. So the number 4 piston is at top dead centre. Make sure rotor points to number 4 spark plug wire position. And check valve clearance for number 2 exhaust, number 3 inlet and number 4 inlet and exhaust. With the camshaft cover removed and the engine warm check the cylinder head bolt torques with a torque wrench, tightening the bolts in the specified sequence. To conclude, with a new gasket, install the camshaft cover and securely tighten the mounting bolts. Next reinstall the spark plugs, Distributor Cap and spark plug wires, before finally reattaching the air cleaner and various hoses, electrical connections and vacuum lines. Start the engine to check for oil leak from the camshaft cover and the cylinder head.
