Due to the complicated nature of the task and the unique tools and equipment required, having a professional perform the task is preferable to work on the valves, valve seats and valve guides, otherwise called a valve job. The home mechanic is able to remove the head, disassemble it, carry out the initial cleaning and inspection, and after that assemble the head and hand it over to a dealer service department or an automotive machine shop where the actual servicing of the valve is done. The dealer service department or automotive machine shop will strip the valves and springs off, rework or change the valves and valve seats, rework the valve guides, check and change the valve springs, spring retainers and keepers, install the new valve seals, make sure that the installed spring height is correct, and reassemble the valves associated with the valve. Cylinder head gasket surface will also be resurfaced in case it is warped. Once the procedure of the valve job is done by a specialist, the head will be in a state of a like-new one. On returning the head, it should also be cleaned again before being installed on the engine to remove the last traces of any metal particles and abrasive grit that might still exist, as a result of the valve service operation or head resurfacing operation, using compressed air where possible to blow out all the oil holes and passages.
