To withdraw the distributor in the piston engine of 1978-85 model, loosen the clips or screws fitting the distributor cap, taking note of the position of the wire that fits the No. 1 cylinder, then turn the engine till the timing mark follows the pin at the front cover so that the rotor lines the No. 1 spark plug wire. Deconnection Unscrew the vacuum advance line and the primary wires, mark the distributor body and the rotor with a match mark, unscrew the retaining bolt and draw the distributor out, including theO-ring should one be present. To install, provided the engine is turned, turn the crankshaft to Top Dead Center (TDC) as the No. 1 cylinder, install a new O-ring, align the distributor with matchmarks, screw in the mounting bolt without tightening, reconnect the vacuum line and primary connector, reset the dwell (cleaned ignition points) and adjust the ignition timing. In models of 1986-89, remove the spark plug wires, vacuum hoses, electrical connectors, rotate the engine to TDC, remove the distributor hold-down bolts and dispose of the O-ring. To install, note: With installation, place the No. 1 cylinder at TDC, lubricate a new O-ring with oil, align distributor blade with oil holes or matchmarks, install distributor, and reconnect wiring and hoses and set ignition timing. In the case of the 929 model, the same process is repeated by removing the spark plug wires and electrical connector, rotating the engine to TDC, removing the distributor and installing a new O-ring, making sure to align it properly, and reassembling the electrical components and setting the ignition timing settings. In rotary engines between 1979-85, turn the engine until the TDC timing mark is aligned, matchmark the distributor and the rotor housing, disconnect the hoses and electrical connectors, remove distributor and then in installing, keep the engine undisturbed, position the distributor gear once into position in the body, insert it carefully, and reconnect all the parts then adjust the ignition timing.
