In order to install and remove the oil pump in different models, one should start by draining the crankcase and taking off the
Oil Pan. On the 1978-80 GLC and 1979-82 626, disengage the oil pump sprocket and chain, loosen the bolts and pull out the pump assembly. During the installation, place the O-ring, position dowel pins, and install the pump to the engine block with the drive chain in proper position. In the case of the Front Wheel Drive GLC, the steps to take are very similar but the sprocket must be pressed off. In the GLC Wagon, take out the crankshaft pulley and front cover, followed by the removal of the oil pump drive sprocket and cover and replace the new parts. With the 1983-87 826, turn the engine to TDC, take out the timing belt and dislodge the oil strainer and pump. During reinstallation, apply oil to coat seals and tighten them accordingly. In the 626/MX-6 of 323 and 1988-89, take the front cover with the oil strainer off then attach the new pump and strainer with exact same torque settings. In the case of the 1988-89 929 with a positive displacement gear pump, it is necessary to disconnect the battery, drain the oil and remove the oil pan and pump assembly with the appropriate O-ring being installed. In the case of the 1989 929 having a trochoid gear pump, it is advisable to do the same but to make sure and replace the gasket and tighten the bolts accordingly. Installation finishes once the crankcase is full without exception, refit the battery, and then start the engine to look at the leakage.
