Mazda B2000 Clutch Fork Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
How should one properly handle and maintain the clutch release bearing and Clutch Fork to avoid asbestos exposure and ensure optimal performance on Mazda B2000?
    A:
Asbestos, which causes cancer, is present in the clutch driven disc hence it is essential to avoid cleaning the surfaces of the clutches by use of compressed air and breathing in the dust that comes out of the same and using instead a commercially available brake cleaner fluid. With the previous models, a spring on release bearing collar should be removed first, then clutch fork, dust cover boot, and release bearing. Wipe all parts with an oil and grease, do not dip in solvent, and polish all burrs in crocus cloth. Apply all around the bearing retainer and both sides of the clutch fork at contact points, a thin coating of lithium base grease, and also lightly apply the release bearing surface where it contacts the fingers of the pressure plate. Apply lithium grease into the grease groove in the bearing hub but be careful not to spill over onto the bore which will enter the clutch disc. Prior to installation of the bearing, look out the presence of noise or roughness by rotating the outer race with the inner race and in case it is noisy, the bearing ought to be changed. Apply light coat of lithium grease to the part of the input shaft bearing retainer on the part of the clutch housing, apply grease on the end of the pivot pin and place the clutch fork on it. Oil the clutch fork contact points and screw in the release bearing with or without reconnecting the release collar spring. Lastly, install the dust boot, make sure that the release bearing hub slides on the input shaft bearing retainer.
