To install and remove the thermostat on non-2,555cc and 2,606cc engine, drain sufficient coolant to bring the engine under the thermostat housing on the left front side of the cylinder block and be careful to use a sealable container so as to avoid causing injury to the pets. Unscrew the temperature sending unit wire, disconnect the coolant outlet elbow and in most cases place the vacuum control valve aside. Disassemble the coolant by-pass hose, the thermostat and housing in the engine taking note of the jiggle pin location before removing the thermostat in the housing. After cleaning all the gasket material out of the parts, install a thermostat in the housing using the jiggle pin up, apply sealer onto a fresh gasket and place it over the thermostat housing. Install the thermostat housing with a new gasket and water resistant sealer, remove the bolts to 20 ft. lbs., install the coolant outlet elbow and vacuum control valve (where needed). Install the by-pass and radiator hose, reconnect the temperature sending unit wire and fill up the cooling system with the correct coolant and run the engine to test the amount of coolant and to test any leakages. To drain the cooling system below the thermostat, quick-lube 2,555cc engine, take off the hoses and housing, dispose the gasket, and wipe the surfaces. Install a new gasket to the water box, position the thermostat and screw the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. after which the radiator hose has to be connected and the clamp tightened to 35 in. lbs. and the cooling system filled. Drain the cooling system below the housing, then remove the upper hose, and the housing by loosening the upper nut and the lower bolt (2,606cc engine) Then place a new thermostat in the head with the jiggle pin on the upper surface, clean the mating surfaces, place a new gasket on the head, apply adhesive sealer to the gasket, install it on the head, and tighten the nut and the bolt with 19 ft. lbs. of torque before filling the cooling system.
