Mazda B2200 Brake Booster

The Mazda B2200 Brake Booster allows the driver to press the pedal with significantly less force to stop the truck by converting engine vacuum into added hydraulic force. This Mazda Brake Booster, which is mounted to the pedal arm and the master cylinder, consists of a closed shell, a flexible diaphragm, and a pushrod attached to the pedal. At cruising speed, engine vacuum on both sides of the chamber maintains the balance of the diaphragm. The act of pressing the brake opens an internal valve allowing outside air to enter the back half of the housing; thus the greater atmospheric pressure forces the diaphragm and power piston forward, which is multiplied by foot force before it acts on the master cylinder. Once the pedal is released, the vacuum is restored equally on both sides and the system returns to normal. Mazda over the years provided two booster designs on the small pickup. The simpler vacuum unit uses engine manifold suction or an auxiliary pump and is preferred due to its simple construction and extended service life. Later models applied a Mazda hydraulic Brake Booster which taps pressure from either the power steering pump or a small electric pump, which is handy when there is limited engine vacuum, as in heavy throttle or turbo use. The hydraulic one is slightly heavier but provides uniform support irrespective of the engine load and provides the second B2200 model with a reliable braking feel.

Mazda B2200 Brake Booster Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the power brake booster on Mazda B2200?
    A:
In order to remove and install the power brake booster, begin by disassembling the master cylinder (and proportioning bypass valve bracket where present) and unconnected the vacuum line to the booster and the pushrod to the brake pedal. Unbolt and take out the power booster of the firewall and to install the part, verify the clearance between the piston of the master cylinder and the power booster pushrod, it should be 0; possible, and torque the mounting nuts to 17 ft. lbs. Removing the wiper motor and linkage assembly, then the master cylinder and the pushrod, start with the removal of the wiper arms, drive link nuts, and the battery ground cable, then the wiper motor, and then the wiper linkage assembly, then the 6-cylinder engine. Once the power booster is removed, ensure you check the clearance and replace the firewall with a new gasket with sealant attached, select the position of the vacuum unit, and torque the nuts to 19 ft. lbs. before reconnecting the pushrod and vacuum line, attaching the master cylinder, and wiper motor, with the wiper arms having a minimum distance of 30mm at rest when bleeding the brakes. With a 4-cylinder engine, unscrew the fluid sensor line, master cylinder, pushrod and vacuum line and unscrew the power booster. Similar clearance checks and gasket positioning should be followed during installation with correct torque and connections. In the case of Navajo, make sure to fit the booster rubber reaction disc, unplug the stop lamp switch wiring, prop up the master cylinder and loosen the retaining nuts and vacuum hose. Once the master cylinder has been removed off the booster, delete the parts of the stop lamp switch on the brake pedal arm and the booster bolt on the dash panel. During installation, make sure that the booster assembly is properly fit, lock the master cylinder and reconnect the vacuum hose and stop lamp switch wiring and then perform a test on the brake action. Tighten the power brake booster pushrod clearance with a special tool except the Navajo where the spacing between the booster pushrod and assembly front face must be 0.995 inch (25.3mm).
