Mazda B2200 Driveshaft

The Mazda B2200 Driveshaft is a very important component that connects engine torque to the rear axle and allows the truck to have free and easy suspension on the roadways. This Mazda Driveshaft assembly separates the transmission output from the differential input, which are mechanical power components that cannot be directly connected by the gearbox and axle. It can resist the twisting and shearing forces caused by acceleration or braking forces; therefore, the design considers a high strength to low weight ratio to prevent the addition of inertia to the vehicle that would ruin performance. The shaft incorporates universal joints at both ends to allow it to swivel as the angle changes; to handle road bumps, chassis flex, and length changes incurred during suspension travel, most models have a splined slip section that enables the shaft to adjust its length slightly. There were years in which it was made entirely of paired Cardan style joints and some in which the joints were supplemented by a rag or jaw type coupling to provide additional vibration damping, but all the styles aim at the same objective of providing a steady rotating action without binding. All Mazda trucks of this model continue to have the propeller shaft under the frame in direct two-wheel-drive configuration, unlike front wheel drive systems that need numerous shorter components. Mazda retains the Driveshaft straight in its design to preserve the original harmony among the gearbox, shaft, and axle that ensures longevity and comfort when riding the classic B2200 pickup.

Mazda B2200 Driveshaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install front driveshafts and universal joints on Mazda B2200?
    A:
In order to remove and install driveshaft, ensure that first, the vehicle is raised and supported safely to fit the matches the driveshaft against the end yoke so as to fit in correctly. To release the boot off the transfer case slip yoke, pull back the dust slinger then remove the bolts and straps holding the driveshaft to the front driving axle yoke, and the U-joint assembly. Removal of the driveshaft assembly to replace it with a new one is done by simply sliding the splined yoke assembly out of the transfer case, checking the boot and stud yoke splines over to ensure no damage has occurred, and replacing where necessary. To install, use a light coat of Multi-purpose Long-Life lubricant on the splines of the yoke and the inner part of the rubber boot, install the U-joint assembly in the original position and use retaining bolts and straps, fitting them to the required torque. When there is a single type of Cardan type U-joint, the driveshaft is removed and the parts should be matched by removing the snaprings and pressing the bearing caps out by sockets. Cleanse new bearing caps and put them on, making sure that they sit and that they move freely. In a U-joint, in case of a double type Cardan, match the spiders and yokes, then snapring screws are removed and then the bearings are pressed out using a U-joint tool. Install the joint by placing the spider bosses in correct position, packing socket relief and ball with lubricant and installing the required components and snaprings. Lastly, lubricate the driveshaft slip splines and carefully re-fit slip yoke by replacing it in its original position.
