The EGR system reduces the amount of Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) discharged in the exhaust gas. It lowers the temperature in the combustion chamber, thus lessening the amount of NOx generated. This is achieved by introducing spent gases from the EGR system into the combustion chamber along with the incoming air / fuel mixture. The EGR valve has several sensors and solenoids that control the induction of exhaust gas. To service the system, all vacuum hoses must be checked for tightness and leaks. The engine runs at normal operating temperature. Then, the first and second EGR control valves are tested and to do this the vacuum hoses must be disconnected. The engine must run smoothly when this is done and if it does not, the valves will have to be replaced for proper functioning. In addition, attach a vacuum gauge and confirm that 2,500 rpm produces a reading of at least 5.9 in.Hg; if not, check the relevant parts. To troubleshoot the EGR position sensor, measure the voltage at each terminal both with vacuum and without vacuum. Then, compare with the proper specifications. A faulty sensor will reflect a bad reading. If there are discrepancies, check the wiring harness and EGR ECU. The duty solenoid valve must be tested by removing the hoses, applying air and checking that air flows when voltage is applied. If it doesn't work properly, replace it. Ensure during the EGR modulator valve test that vacuum is maintained and if it not operationally responding, replace it. To remove and install the EGR control valve, tag and disconnect the hoses, unbolt the valve, and reverse the procedure to install.
