The first thing to do before starting the process of removing and installing the 2.2L engine is to disconnect the battery ground and drain the cooling system, though a sealable container should be used to coolant to avoid damaging pets. The next thing to take off is the distributor, fan shroud, fan, alternator, air injection pipes, fan pulley, hub, and bracket, then the air conditioning compressor drive belt and the power steering pump drive belt assuming they are fitted. Next take off the crankshaft pulley, baffle plate, both upper and lower timing belt covers, timing belt and crankshaft sprocket. Drain the oil observing the precautions against the long contact with used engine oil. To remove the skid plate, place the engine on a shop crane or a floor jack and then take out the crossmember, idler arm, engine mount gusset plates, belle housing front cover,
Oil Pan, oil pick-up tube, and oil pump. To install it, grease the O-ring and RTV silicone sealer to the mounting part of the pump, apply oil rubber to the lip of the oil seal, and fit the pump, tightening the bolts. Wipe all gasket surfaces, align the rim of the oil pan and fasten the oil pan, bell housing front cover, engine mount gusset plates, idler arm, crossmember, and skid plate. Install crankshaft sprocker, timing belt, covers, crankshaft pulley, drive belts, reconnect alternator, fan shroud, fan and distributor. Add oil into the engine and the cooling system and reconnect the battery ground cable. In the case of the 2.6L engine of 1987-88, disconnect the battery ground, drain the coolant and remove the radiator hoses and the radiator. Take out alternator, accessory belts, distributor, crankshaft pulley,
Water Pump assembly and the cylinder head as required. Empty the engine oil, take on the oil pan, timing case cover, then extract the chain guides, sprockets as well as oil pump. Installation requires the reverse order, and it is necessary to consider the use of new gaskets and tightening bolts to the required connected force. In the case of the 3.0L engine, it is necessary to disconnect the negative battery cable, raise the vehicle, drain the engine oil as well as the cooling system and remove the timing belt, oil pan, and oil pump. Install a new oil seal and gasket and tighten the oil pump bolts. With the 4.0L engine, the oil pan assembly, oil pick-up and pump should be removed and then the new pump primed with oil before being installed. Check crescent-shaped slinger and clearances between gears and the body of the pump, changing where needed according to the required measurements. Wash and then inspect all parts to ensure that there are no wear or damages and that the parts have clearances to perform optimally.
