In order to install/removal of a thermostat, make sure that; in case the replacement one has a jiggle pin, then it must be upwards (towards the top of engine) and that is on the side that is facing the water outlet. In the case of the 2.2L engine, drain coolant under the thermostat housing is on the left front side of the cylinder block, disconnect the temperature sending unit wire and eliminate the coolant outlet elbow. Open the vacuum control valve, which is there as needed, disconnect the coolant by-pass hose, and remove the thermostat and housing. Record the location of the jiggle pin and remove all the gasket material. During installation, place the thermostat with the jiggle pin in the front, place a fresh gasket with sealer on it and fit it on the housing and tighten bolts to 14-19 ft. lbs. Re-attach hoses and fill the cooling system next, ensure that it has no leaks. In the case of the 2.6L 1987-88 engine, drain coolant under the thermostat, take off hoses and housing, throw out the gasket and wipe off surfaces. Install new gasket and thermostat, 15 ft. lbs on bolts. On 1989-93 models, drain coolant, do not use the upper hose and housing, clean surfaces, fit the new thermostat with the jiggle pin upward, and close it with adhesive sealer to 19 ft. lbs. In the case of the 3.0L, the front end should be raised, coolant drained, and the lower hose and casing removed, cleaning off of surfaces and installing a new gasket when necessary and then fit the thermostat and housing and firmly screwed together to 19 ft. lbs. To the 4.0L engine, avoid draining the engine coolant, disconnect battery ground, take out air cleaner duct and upper radiator hose, and disconnect the thermostat housing. Cover the mating surfaces with cleaniness, position the sealing ring, place the thermostat with air release valve in the up position, affix adhesive sealer and tighten bolts to 7-10 ft. lbs.
