To change the fuel pump and sending unit and replace the fuel pump and sending unit of the 323, Protege, 1990-92 626, MX-6 and 1992-94 MX-3, begin by discharging the fuel pressure and unscrewing the negative battery cable. To remove the rear seat cushion, squeeze the clips, and remove the electrical connector with the fuel pump/sending unit, and access cover by unscrewing. Turn off the fuel supply and return hoses and remove the pump/sending unit of the fuel pump in the tank. Disconnect electrical connector of the sending unit, unscrew the connecting nuts and unscrew the attaching nuts and remove the sending unit of the assembly. Installation To install, connect the sending unit on the fuel pump assembly, the nuts and reconnect the electrical connector. Install the fuel pump/sending back into the tank using a new gasket and attaching using mounting screws. Install the access cover, reconnect the fuel lines and make sure that the rear seat cushion is positioned correctly. Lastly, re- attach the negative battery cable, start the engine and inspect it with regard to correct operation and fuel leaks. The 1995 MX-3 models require the same steps except that it is vital to release the pressure of the fuel system and unplug the battery cable prior to the removal of the rear seat cushion and cleaning the regions around the fuel pump cover. Once the fuel pump has been taken out, fit a new seal ring then re-assemble all the parts ensuring that all connections are firmly held before offering the fuel pump to the test of being leak free. In the Millenia and 1993-98 626/MX-6/Probe models, release fuel system pressure, drain the tank, and disconnect all hoses and then it is necessary to remove the fuel pump. Install a new pump with gasket, reconnecting the hoses and checking leakages after the fuel is added. In order to check fuel system pressure, jumper the diagnostic link terminals with a gauge and check that the pressure was within specifications. In case there are problems, make sure there are no restrictions, power to the pump, and electrical connections and then reconnect everything.
