Mazda Millenia Intake Manifold Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What precautions should be taken when draining coolant and what steps are involved in removing and installing the intake manifold on Mazda Millenia?
    A:
Ethylene glycol antifreeze is very attractive to pets and thus it is important to be careful when draining the coolant since once it is consumed by the pets, it is deadly. It is always advisable to use a sealable container in draining and reusing coolant unless it is contaminated or more than a few years old. With 2.0L and 1.6L engines, and (except K8) 1.8L engines, relieve fuel system pressure, disconnection of the negative battery cable, and drain the cooling system. Unscrew the air intake hose, accelerator cable, and the fuel lines, mark and loosen vacuum hoses, and electrical connectors. Take out the intake manifold support bracket and intake manifold assembly and clean all surfaces of the gasket before replacing. In 1995-98 1.5L and 1.8L engines, repeat the same steps, but make sure to disconnect mass air flow sensor and throttle body. In order to remove the intake manifold, the throttle body and the corresponding solenoid valves will have to be removed first (when working on the 1.6L engine in 1995). In 1.8L (K8) and 2.5L engines, remove the accelerator cable and the electrical connectors required and unscrew the intake manifold and examine it to confirm any damage. In the case of 2.3L engine disconnection of several components such as the EGR valve and fuel lines needs to be done and then the intake manifold removed. The following are important steps to be taken during installation of all engines; cleaning of mating surfaces, installing new gaskets, and tightens bolts with correct torque value, re-assembling all parts, and verifying leakage after filling and bleeding of cooling system.
