Installation and removal of the parking brake system requires initiating by disconnecting the negative battery cable. In cars other than Millenia, the rear center console is taken out by removing the screw plugs and retainer screws then disconnecting the mounting bolts and floor console. Unscrew the cable adjusting nut at the parking brake handle, and unplug the brake cable and the spring. Load the vehicle slowly by slowly lifting it, unscrew the parking brake cable mounting bolts and unscrew the cable end attached to the parking brake assembly. Disassemble any frame fixings still there and pull off the cables. To install, observe the cable with the rear actuator and connect it using the mounting bolts. Reinstate the cables of the parking brake back to the handle and tighten the adjusting nut to make sure it is in proper tension. Screw all cable retainers to 14-18 ft. lbs. (19-25Nm) and then test the drag on the rear wheels by pushing the parking brake on and off a few times. Lastly, fit the rear center console assembly and road test it to test the brake functions. In the case of Millenia, loosen the console attached on the parking brake lever, take away the nut that is maintaining the front parking brake cable, and raise the vehicle without complications. Unplug the rear parking brake cables out of the equalizer, and repeat the reverse steps of installing the cable again with the front parking cable, ensuring that the nut is firmly screwed on to the cable to 14-18 ft. lbs. (19-25Nm). In the case of the rear cable, disconnect the rear cable to the front cable, strip off clips and mounting bolts and remove the rear parking brake shoe assembly in order to get at the rear cable. Install again in reverse, tighten the screws of the mount in the same way to 14-18 ft. lbs. (19-25Nm). To make it fit, make sure that the parking brake cable is clear and the brake shoes have been properly adjusted. Turn the engine on, press brake pedal with a lot of force a couple of times, then press the parking brake and count the notches and the target should be 5-7 strokes on vehicles except Millenia and 7-9 strokes on Millenia. Should an adjustment be necessary, turn the adjusting nut in front of cable, there being no slackness between the nut and lever before tightening the locknut. It should not be over-tightened because it may cause cable failure or brake drag. Having adjusted, raise the rear of the car, ensure that the rear brakes are not dragging, and ensure that the parking brake is holding the car on a slant.
