Check brake shoes: see peeling and cracking of the lining, excessive unevenness of the lining, and the measurement of the lining thickness, which should not be less than 0.04 inch (1.0 mm). The brake drum should be removed first to remove the brake shoes. Assuming it exists, detach the cable of the parking brake on the rear of the brake backing plate. Take out the upper and lower return springs, the hold pins and springs with the help of a prytool removing the pressure of the brake shoe adjuster. Removing the lower (leading side) brake shoe then (assuming it has one) remove the
Parking Brake Cable of the actuating lever and then the upper (trailing side) brake shoe. Should it be required to remove the clip holding the actuating lever to the shoe, loosen it, and then remove the lever and attach it to the new shoe and attach it with a new retaining clip. To install it, one attaches the upper (trailing side) brake shoe to the operating lever, thence to the wheel cylinder and backing plate and then the brake shoe hold spring and hold pin. Install next the anti-rattle spring, and lower return spring to both brake shoes. Install the leading side brake shoe to leading side operating lever then to wheel cylinder and anchor plate, then the hold spring and hold pin of the leading side brake shoe. Lastly, fit on the upper return spring and the brake drum.
