When overhaul is suggested, which may suggest fluid leakage, investigate all alternatives before commencing the task. Exchange of new and factory rebuilt calipers is available on an exchange basis and the process is made easier. In case the decision is made to rebuild the calipers, it is important to make sure that a rebuild kit is present and rebuild calipers in pairs. The process would be applied to the front and rear brakes, however, the front one is depicted. The first steps include putting the parking brake on and blocking the wheels and then loosening the lug nuts on the wheels, lifting the vehicle, and positioning it safely on jackstands and then taking the wheels off. End the
Brake Hose by loosening the banjo bolt, and then having a rag to grab the spilt fluid, and then another plastic bag to wrap the hose over to avoid the loss and contamination of the fluid. In case the caliper will not be fully removed, do not remove the hose but hang the caliper using wire to prevent bleeding the system. To clean the caliper exterior with brake cleaner or denatured alcohol but not gasoline or petroleum based solvents. Carefully prise the dust boot off the caliper bore and pad the caliper with wood block or rags then blow out the piston using compressed air and take care not to touch the fingers. Do not leave the piston seal to avoid damaging, throw away all rubber parts after removing the screw used to take out the caliper bleeder, and clean the rest with the brake system cleaner. Inspect the piston and caliper bore, and remove any damaged and corroded lock bolts. Lubricate the piston bore and seal with clean brake fluid, place the seal on, lubricate the piston and then insert it into the bore. Install the dust boot and screw the bleeder. Installation: To install, put a new sealing washer on both sides of the brake hose fitting, and install the banjo bolt and tighten it to the required torque. Bleed the brakes in case the banjo bolt is loose or has been taken off and fit the wheels into place, drop the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts. Lastly, check on the functionality of the brakes and then resume regular service of the vehicle.
