Danger: The return and hold-down springs must not be left unchanged whenever the brake shoes are changed because of the continuous heating and cooling process which makes the springs lose tension over time which then leads to the dragging of the shoes on the drum leading to faster wear. To facilitate the installation of the brake assembly when it needs to be removed, put together all the parts in assembled sequence on a rag next to the working area. Unscrew the lug nuts on the wheels, lift the rear of the car and place it on jackstands in place so that it is not rolled over. Disengage the parking brake and take out the wheels, be sure that you change all four rear brake shoes together when working with one brake assembly at a time so as not to confuse parts. In case the brake drum is not easily removable off the axle and shoe assembly make sure that the parking brake is set free, put penetrating oil at the bunch-to-drum connection, leave it to soak and then pull the drum off. In case it is impossible to remove it, first of all, take off the two plugs of the backing plate, then with a small screwdriver, lift off the lever out of the adjusting star wheel while turning the adjusting wheel out of the same screwdriver to slide the shoes off the drum. The drum should be reinstalled with the check of cracks, scratch marks, deep scratches, and hard spots that need possibility of going to an automotive machine shop where it can be resurfaced in case they cannot be removed using fine emery cloth. Professionals advise that when performing a brake job the drums should be resurfaced to ensure that they are not out of round; in case of too much wear then new drums will be required. At least, unless reoccurring, glazing should be removed on the surface with medium-grit emery cloth in a swirling motion. Next place the brake drum on the axle flange, then the wheels and lug nuts, and tighten them with the finger. The rear brakes are automatically adjusted and only need to be adjusted after changing the shoes or in case the adjusting lever has been manipulated during another maintenance. To fit, take out the two hole plugs of the backing plate, insert the screwdriver against the adjuster through hole A and rotate the adjuster in the direction of the arrow, as shown on the backing plate until the wheel is locked. Then push pawl lever of self-adjuster with hole B and loosen the star wheel until the drum turns freely without drag as with other wheel. Set the
Parking Brake Cable, then lower the vehicle to the ground, screw lug nuts to set to the required torque and verify the brake functionality and proceed to traffic.
