In order to take the inner CV joint and boot, first take out the drive axle of the car and fix it in a vise with the jaws lined with wood or rags to avoid breakage. Use a small screwdriver to pry the boot clamp retaining tabs upwards, and slide the clamps off the boot. Turn the boot over the
Axle Shaft again and push the wire ring ball retainer off of the outer race and then slide the outer race off the bearing assembly. Draw the correspondence between the outer race and the axle shaft and remove the outer race off the inner bearing assembly by use of paint or a felt tip marker to help make the relationship clear. Mark the inner race, the cage, and axleshaft end so that they can be well put back in place. Use snap-ring pliers to remove the snap-ring in the groove on the axleshaft and push the inner bearing assembly off the axleshaft. A small screwdriver or a piece of wood can be used to pry the balls out of the cage, but all care must be taken not to nick or scratch the balls, and the inner race lands have to be aligned with the cage windows in order to draw the race out. Wipe down the parts using solvent, and check the cage and the races to ensure they are worn and damaged which is normal since the solvent can leave shiny spots. To reassemble, put the inner race into the cage and match the match marks and press the balls into the cage windows using your thumbs. The axleshaft splines should be tape-wrapped to prevent boot damage and the small boot clamp and boot should then be slid over the axleshaft and the tape removed. Fit the inner race and cage assembly to the axelshaft with the larger side at the end and then fit the snap-ring in the groove making sure that it fits into the groove completely. Pack the outer race and boot with the required and type of CV joint grease, filling it into the inner race and cage assembly until it is completely packaged with grease. Slide down the outer race on to the inner race, matching the match marks and install the wire ring retainer. Clean the excess grease inside the axle boot groove on the outer race, insert the small diameter of the boot into the depressed section in the axleshaft and adjust the drive axle to the correct length. To level the pressure in the boot, it is advisable to insert a dull screwdriver between the boot and the outer race taking care not to break the boot, then attach the boot clamps and the drive axle. To disassemble the outer CV joint and boot, pull the inner CV joint off the axleshaft and disassemble it followed by taking the boot clamps off the outer CV joint boot and slide the boot off the axleshaft. Innermost and outer CV joints to be sponged with clean solvent and blown with compressed air, care being taken to wipe out all old grease. Bend the outer CV joint housing at an angle to reveal the bearings, inner race and cage, checking them on wear and damage, in case of any damage, change the drive axle, and outer joint assembly. To reassemble, slip the new outer boot over the drive axle, and use the vinyl tape to cover the spline to avoid damage and then apply the appropriate amount of grease to the outer joint and boot stuffing the joint with as much grease as it can hold. Fit the boot in place and fit the new clamps, replace the inner CV joint and clean and re-fit the drive axle.
