Seated in the exhaust stream, the zirconia tip, which is coated with platinum, compares leftover exhaust oxygen to outside air and then creates a small voltage that switches between approximately 0.1 and 0.9 volts; as mixtures lean or richen, the computer varies injector pulse width to achieve a 14.7 to 1 ratio. All late-generation Mazda vehicles have an upstream sensor in front of the catalytic converter to regulate mixture and a downstream sensor after the converter to check the status of the catalyst, so V6-powered MPV versions have at least four. The older models use the traditional narrow-band Oxygen Sensor, and newer Mazda models can be switched to a wideband air-fuel ratio sensor that displays mixture over a wider range with current flow rather than voltage, allowing the computer to have finer control during hard acceleration or idle. Both types have a built-in heater to hurry the sensor to a temperature of approximately 600 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure closed loop operation begins within seconds of ignition. Response also becomes sluggish with age, oil ash, and coolant leakage and generates additional fuel consumption and a glowing check engine lamp; hence Mazda owners usually change a slow Oxygen Sensor after every 80,000 miles of driving in order to maintain power and mileage and meet emissions standards.
