Mazda MPV Throttle Body

The essence of the Mazda MPV Throttle Body is to measure the air flowing into the engine in order to allow the Mazda computer to add an appropriate quantity of fuel to the air to create comfortable power. It is installed between the intake manifold and the air filter, and its butterfly plate opens in direct proportion to the driver's accelerator input in order to allow additional air to flow and initiate or increase injector pulse lengthening to provide additional fuel. The minivan featured a Throttle Body injection unit or all-in-one unit made up of one or two fuel injectors, a pressure regulator and the throttle plate below the original air cleaner, providing a cost-effective transition between carburetors and modern injection. In later periods the MPV subsequently incorporated independent multiport injectors, with the Throttle Body itself left to air ingress with sensors, including the throttle position sensor and an idle air control port, providing continuous feedback to the PCM to maintain steady idle and low emissions. Mechanical cable linkages were also replaced by electronic throttle control or drive-by-wire, whereby the two pedal sensors and an electric motor rotate the plate to enhance safety features and remove sticking cables. The owners of Mazda continue to enjoy cold starting and high fuel mileage, and periodic cleanup of deposits or replacement of worn shafts bring back sharp response. This allowed Mazda to make parts modular even with high mileage, resulting in the ability to replace individual sensors or motors without replacing the whole unit.

Mazda MPV Throttle Body Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to detach the air intake duct from the throttle body and ensure proper throttle valve function on Mazda MPV?
    A:
Disconnect the air intake duct with the throttle body and clear it off. With an assistant keeping an eye on the throttle valves, have an assistant squeeze the throttle pedal and keep the throttle valves and throttle body parts in an open state and within a smooth motion with the throttle valves opening fully. The throttle valve number two is pre-programmed to start opening at the same moment as throttle valve number one. The throttle body unit should be replaced in case of failures of the throttle valves. In order to take off the throttle body, remove the air intake duct, place it aside, remove the accelerator cable, and remove the cruise control cable (where applicable). Mark and unplug all electrical connectors, un-hose and mark all vacuum hoses, and un-hose and mark all coolant hoses and plug them to avoid a lot of coolant loss. V6 models have the rear coolant hose which may not be accessible until the throttle body has been removed off the dynamic chamber. Unmount the throttle body using the throttle body mounting nuts and bolts, and dismount the throttle body to the air intake plenum or intake air pipe eliminating the clamp on the coolant hose with needlenose pliers. Seal the air intake plenum or dynamic chamber with a clean cloth to ensure that no foreign material gets in. Installation is the opposite of removal, which makes sure that the throttle body mounting nuts are tightened to a required torque and the accelerator cable is adjusted when the work is over. Monitor the level of coolant and fill in case of need.
