Mazda MPV Fuel Tank

Mazda MPV Fuel Tank serves as safe storage for gasoline in the minivan, while also containing vapors and housing major fuel delivery components. The Fuel Tank is located under the rear floor and not only holds the liquid fuel but also accommodates the electric pump and the level sender; it uses internal baffles to ensure the gas remains at the pickup during sharp maneuvers and works in coordination with the EVAP system to prevent fumes from escaping the car and entering the atmosphere. Throughout the production life of the family hauler, Mazda installed two primary tank designs, starting with a stamped steel version and later a high-density polyethylene version. The steel Fuel Tank consists of welded sheets of treated metal which provide solid impact resistance, but continuous exposure to road salt and moisture allows rust to eat through the seams or even the inner surface, resulting in leakages. The newer plastic shell is blow-molded to shape, reducing weight, and corrosion is no longer a concern; however, severe temperature changes or impacts with hard objects can still cause cracks. Regardless of the type installed, Mazda supplies a leak-checked assembly with a locking ring and seal, and corrosion-prone metal straps are fitted to the tank to allow it to be securely suspended. Mazda too notes that, since both models are identical in purpose and basic plumbing, interchanging them requires consideration of filler neck clearance and venting so that any MPV will still get an uninterrupted supply of fuel and be able to run silently and without odor.

Mazda MPV Fuel Tank Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to safely remove a fuel tank on Mazda MPV?
    A:
To prevent wastage of high fuel quantities, it is essential to make sure that the fuel tank is almost full before commencing the practice. Start by disconnecting the fuel tank filler cap to release the pressure followed by releasing the fuel system pressure. Unplug the cable of the negative battery, then remove the drain plug to empty the fuel into a container that is approved. Disconnect the electrical connector of the fuel pump and the disconnection of the fuel feed and return hose. Lift the vehicle and place it on jackstands and then detach the fuel tank shield by loosening the bolts located on the side of the fuel tank cover then loosening the bolts on the side. Unscrew the fuel filler neck and breather hoses, electrical connector on the side of the fuel tank. Place a floor jack or jackstands under the tank but put a block of wood between the block and the fuel tank to prevent any damage. Unscrew the straps that hold the fuel tank in the car and pivot them downwards until they are clear. Reduce the tank to ensure that all the parts are unattached, and then complete the lowering of the tank and extract it out of the car. The removal is in reverse sequence of installation.
