Mazda MPV Water Pump

The Mazda MPV Water Pump ensures that the engine of the minivan is not overheated by forcing coolant through the block and to the radiator, where the surplus heat exits the system to the air. This piece of equipment is located next to the lower radiator hose and is a spinning device, an all-steel projection on sealed bearings, belt-pulley-driven, with a finned impeller sweeping coolant across the water jacket at each stroke of the crankshaft. The early MPV models had a heavy cast-iron enclosure; however, in subsequent Mazda models, the pumps have lightweight aluminum castings that combat rust and trim down weight. In the majority of model years the system has been a mechanically driven design, including the part belt with the alternator, but a few of the more recent designs include compact electric pumps spinning independently and free of belt drag, which provide faster flow while removing the drag of the belt. These two types of Water Pump are applied to accomplish the same task, but the electric type responds faster to sudden changes in temperature. All subsequent MPVs continue to experience the same dependence on constant circulation, and a worn-out pump would soon announce itself in pink or green drips, grumbling noises, or a skyrocketing temperature indicator. The Water Pump cannot be ignored, as unlike other Mazda cooling parts, loss of flow can bend heads and destroy gaskets in a few minutes. Close monitoring of coolant leaks and suspicious sounds aids in ensuring that Mazda powerplants operate smoothly and reliably.

Mazda MPV Water Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install a water pump on Mazda MPV?
    A:
In order to disassemble the water pump, first disconnection of the negative battery cable with the battery is required. With a V6 engine, the 1st cylinder is at TDC of the compression stroke. Then, take the drivebelt(s) off and empty the cooling system, and retain the coolant when in good condition. Following this, remove the cooling fan and shroud then water pump pulley. In the case of a V6 engine, take out the timing belt. Unscrew and remove water pump, tapping it softly with block of wood and hammer in case it is stubborn at the sealing surfaces. Wipe the fastener threads and thread holes of the engine of any corrosion and sealant and compare the new pump with the old pump, making sure that they are the same. Wipe out all the old gasket material using a gasket scraper and wipe the mating surfaces using lacquer thinner or acetone. Installation; apply a thin coat of RTV sealant on the engine face of the new gasket and a thin layer on the gasket mating surface of the new pump and then carefully align the gasket and pump and use a few bolts to fix the gasket. Install the pump and gasket to the engine, then begin turning the bolts/nuts as finger tight, and then continue tightening the bolts in 1/4 turn steps to the designated torque being mindful not to over-tighten. Lastly, install everything that has been taken off to access the pump and fill the cooling system, and test the engine to confirm there is no leakage.
  • Q: What are the methods to check the operation of a water pump and how can a failure in the water pump lead to engine damage on Mazda MPV?
    A:
Problem with water pump may cause severe damage to the engine in case of overheating. It is possible to check the functioning of water pump three times when it is attached to the engine, and in case the pump is proved to be faulty, it must be replaced with new or re-manufactured. When the engine is running at normal operating temperature, the release of radiator hose pressure should provide a minor surge when released in case the water pump is operational. Water pumps contain weep or vent holes and when a failure is experienced with the pump seal, water from the pump will leak through the vent hole resulting in the need to replace the water pump. One might require a flashlight and a mirror to identify the hole on the lower portion of the water pump to check whether it is leaking. Also, in case of failure of the water pump shaft bearings, the howling noise can be heard in the drivebelt region when the engine is running and when not running engine the shaft wear is detected by rocking the water pump pulley of the engine up and down because little movement should be experienced. One should not mistake drivebelt slippage, where there is a squealing sound, with water pump bearing failure.
