To test the switch, find it on top of the accelerator pedal. Insert the positive probe of the voltmeter into terminal C (kickdown switch terminal; yellow/green wire). Ground the negative probe and do not unplug the connector. Switch the ignition key to the On position without starting the engine and lightly press the accelerator pedal by hand, checking the voltmeter; from fully released to about 7/8, the voltmeter should read less than 1.5 volts and from 7/8 to full throttle about 12 volts. Subsequently, after moving the voltmeter positive probe to terminal A (which is the 4-3 switch terminal; green-blue wire), push the accelerator pedal again. You should get less than 1.5 volts (i.e. fully released position to about 5/8 of the travel) and about 12 volts (from 3/4 to full throttle). When you have either voltage that is not correct, check the switch continuity. Unplug the switch connector, and connect an ohmmeter between terminals C and D (kickdown switch terminals). Depress the switch plunger about 1/4 inch. You should show continuity. Subsequently, take the ohmmeter measurement at A & B (the 4-3 switch terminals) and compress the switch plunger about one-eighth to three-sixteenths inch; continuity is expected. Should the continuity test fail in either case, replace the switch. If the readings are correct, adjust the switch by unplugging the connector, loosening the locknuts and unscrewing it (don't remove it). Put the accelerator pedal on the floor, turn the switch clockwise until you hear an audible 'click-on', then turn the switch another 1/4-turn clockwise and release the pedal. Reconnect the electrical connector of the switch, hold the switch in position and tighten the locknuts. To check the kickdown relay, secure-jack the car up and find the relay. The relay is middle of the three relays on the left side of the transmission. Now unplug it. Attach an ohmmeter to relay terminals A and D to check for continuity. The reading should be infinite. With the ohmmeter still connected, connect a 12-volt battery across terminals B and C. A continuity check should now register. Substitute the relay if it does not pass the test. To check the kickdown solenoid, you will need to drain about 1-1/8 quarts of fluid from the transmission. The kickdown solenoid is located on the left side of the transmission just forward of the rear extension housing. Unplug its electrical connector from the unit and unscrew from the transmission. Now, keep a 12volt battery connected between the solenoid terminal and solenoid body. You will observe solenoid plunger extending whenever the battery is connected. Replace it, if solenoid is not functioning properly.
