Mazda MX-6 Vapor Canister Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
How to ensure Canister Purge Valve and Vapor Canister proper function on Mazda MX-6?
    A:
The goal of this system is to trap and store the fuel that evaporates from the carburetor and fuel tank, which prevents hydrocarbon emissions. It is made up of a canister filled with charcoal, having lines going to and forth from it. These are the vent line from the fuel tank, an air vent solenoid in the carburetor, two purge control valves, a water thermo valve and a check valve in the fuel tank line. The fuel tank cap is an integral part. In order to ensure that everything functions properly, please check all lines for kinks, leaks, and breaks. Lastly, check the gas cap gasket for damage and replace it if necessary. For the air vent solenoid valve, remove the air cleaner assembly, press the valve, and turn the ignition on and off to listen for a clicking noise: if you do not hear a click, replace the solenoid. For the No. 1 purge control valve, disconnect and plug various parts, then check whether or not there is air suction into the canister at normal engine idling temperature. After disconnecting the vacuum sensing tube, verify that the air can be blown and sucked through the valve in No. 2 purge control. Check the water thermo valve for airflow. Heat up the water and check whether there is airflow through the valve above 129 °F (54 °C). Through the ports selected for air, and when blocked the others suction is felt through the check valve port. To change a part, disconnect hoses and elastic bands. Make sure that the replaced line matches the old part. To access the solenoid for the air vent, remove the connector. Then, remove the solenoid from the carburetor. To replace the water thermo valve, it is required to the drain and catch with rags the coolant of the cooling system, disconnect the connector and unscrew the valve. To lower the check valve, lift the vehicle, mark the hoses position, disconnect them, and remove the retaining bolt.
