Mazda Protege Air Filter

The Protege Air Filter from Mazda helps protect the engine because dust and debris are never introduced to the engine parts since the incoming air is filtered. Each gallon of gasoline requires about ten thousand gallons of clean air, and thus the pleated paper media in the filter, like a fine mask, filter the particles before they can scar the cylinders in the Mazda engine, foul sensors, or cut power. Captured dirt forms a thick layer over the miles that restricts the airflow, which can deny the car acceleration and fuel economy, and therefore it is important to change it as soon as possible. In the earlier generations, the round dry paper component was placed up above the carburetor, and in the later fuel-injected models the component has a flat shape and is placed inside an air box situated at a distance with a plastic duct that connects it with the throttle body; the design is the same with the same basic mission, just that it is placed differently and in form. When full of dirt, the device can no longer allow the Mazda to breathe, and a few clips and a wing nut will allow a driver to lift the cover, clean off the loose leaves, and put in place a new Air Filter, which fits perfectly against the housing and forces all the air flowing into the intake through its fibers. Cotton or oiled foam types are also available as some automotive filters, although the Protege remains on an efficient dry paper type since it is a compromise among cost, filtration, and airflow. Changing the Air Filter at the recommended intervals is probably one of the easy methods of ensuring that a Mazda runs well and its life is not put at risk.

Mazda Protege Air Filter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and replace the air filter in the engine compartment on Mazda Protege?
    A:
The air filter is installed in a box inside the left front corner of the engine compartment. To change the air filter, loosen the band of intake air duct, detach the duct/hose and then remove five bolts holding air cleaner cover to the box, lift the cover and pull out the air filter element. Check the outer side of the filtering element; the dirty ones may be replaced, whilst those requiring only blowing dust off the back to the front with the blast of compressed air may be cleaned again. Because this is a type of pleated paper filter, it is not washable and cannot be oiled and in case it cannot be properly cleaned, it must be disposed of and a new one installed. When the cover is off be sure not to drop objects into the housing and never drive the car with the air cleaner off because this can cause excessive wear on the engine and may cause fire accidents. Clean up the inside of the air cleaner housing using a damp cloth and then install the new filter into the housing making certain that the filter fits into the housing, and replace the cover in the same order that it was removed.
