Mazda Protege Blower Motor

The Blower Motor provides the small Mazda Protege sedan with the capability of blasting either hot or cold air into the cabin when needed so drivers can clear fogged windows on winter mornings and cool off fast during summer travel. The motor rotates a squirrel-cage fan in the HVAC housing and dash switches pass power through a wiring harness to an electronic control module that increases or decreases the voltage to make the fan blow softly, moderately, or at full blast. Since everything is electronic, a faulty resistor, loose wire, or broken knob immediately eliminates the speed control, leaving the cabin stifling or windows fogged. The majority of passenger vehicles, the Mazda Protege being no exception, have one front fan, unlike the dual-motor designs of larger vehicles; hence design variations between model years are minimal, being confined to connector shapes and mounting tabs. The loss of airflow is highly frequently indicated by silent vents, stiff sliders, or the fan becoming stuck at the high-speed setting, indicating a defect with the module or wiring and not with the Blower Motor itself. Likewise, frequent inspections of secure plugs and intact controls ensure that the small Mazda Protege stays on the road through more than the well-known seasons. Concisely, a good Blower Motor is what makes all Mazda trips enjoyable on the inside, and this is one of the easy but highly crucial items in the entire Mazda HVAC puzzle.

Mazda Protege Blower Motor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to troubleshoot a blower motor that is inoperative on Mazda Protege?
    A:
In 1990-1994, in the event the heater blower fan is non-functional, then check the circuit breaker of the heater, which is directly over the under dash fuse box, and is a 30A fuse with a reset button feature. On later and 1995 models, inspect the 40A fuse in the under dash fuse. On 1990-1994 models withOUT on the reset button, or on 1995-and-later models with a blown fuse, determine the presence of a short in the blower wiring by disconnecting the electrical connector at the blower and checking between the connector and a convenient chassis ground. In case no shorts can be located, re-connect the electrical connector of the blower to perform additional tests and change or fix the harness as needed. On 1990 and 1994 model press the reset button to reset the heater circuit breaker. In order to check the voltage on heater blower motor, dismount the glove box, start the ignition switch and switch the blower to Position 4 (high speed). Test the terminals of the blower motor with a voltmeter, the voltage must be 12 volts. When there is 12 volts and the blower is not running, then replace the blower. Keeping the voltmeter attached, measure the voltage at Positions 3, 2 and 1 making sure that voltage is less at each position and replace resistor assembly where necessary. Additional validation of the resistor could be done by taking off and testing continuity of terminals. In models with no continuity between terminals A and B, between A and C, and between A and D, change the resistor assembly, 1990-1994. check continuity between terminals A and C, C and E, and C and D, 1995 and 1996. In the case of 1997 and 1998 models, compare A, C, B, and D. In 1999 and subsequent models, compare the resistance between identified terminals to the ohmmeter and change the resistor in case the resistance does not fall within specifications.
  • Q: How to remove the blower motor and fan on Mazda Protege?
    A:
In 1990 to 2000 model, one has to start by taking out the trim panel beneath the glove box and in 2001-2003 models, one has to take out the glove box. The second step involves disconnection of the electrical connector of the blower motor and unscrewing of the three screws holding the blower motor to the housing. Take out the motor of the blower, directly down and out of the housing. In an attempt to remove the blower fan, one should take out the fastener in the shaft and pull the fan out of the motor. The order of removal is the opposite of installation.
