When the CV joints need overhauling, usually because of the torn boots, it is better to consider all the possibilities and then begin the job. Whole rebuilt CV joints are available under exchange basis, and this saves a lot of time and effort. Whichever approach is adopted, check the cost and the availability of parts before disassembling the vehicle. Start by taking off the CV joint then clamping it to a vise with jaws lined with wood in order to prevent the destruction of the axle shaft. Test the CV joint for excessive radial play, or worn parts, and also check that it has no difficulty in operating in all directions of motion. In case of the tear on a boot, dismantle the joint, wash the parts and examine the damages caused by the loss of lubrication or contamination. Take a small screwdriver to loosen and remove the retaining tabs on the clamps. Carefully loosen the outer boot off the CV joint, and in case of need cut away old boots. Tripod and axle shaft are marked by sliding the housing out of the tripod, and the inner CV joint boot is pulled back, which is then returned to the tripod to complete the reassembly of the tripod and axle shaft. Use snap-ring pliers to remove the tripod joint snap-ring then drive the tripod joint off the CV joint with a hammer and brass punch without damaging the bearing surfaces or splines. Wipe every part with solvent and examine the bearing surfaces for wear. Assuming that the inner CV joint is worn-out, a new inner joint may be fitted to the old axle shaft, or assumed that a new outer joint and axle shaft are needed, these are sold as a complete set. To put back together, wrap the splines on the axle shaft using electrical tape to cover the boots then slide the clamps and boot(s) over the shaft and place the tripod on the shaft. When it comes to a right side CV joint, put the dynamic damper and a new clamp in place in front of the inner boot. Wipe the tripod assembly and the housing inside with grease, attach the tripod and stuff grease about it. Make sure that the boot is firmly seated in its grooves, and set the length of the CV joint to a standard level, and balance the pressure in the boot, then tighten and fix the clamps.
