In order to eliminate the distributor, disconnect the cable with the negative battery terminal first. Find the distributor cap with a raised 1 on it (unless it has one, find the number one wire of the distributor cap, which leads to the number one spark plug, then trace the wire to it). Take off the distributor cap and twist the engine until the rotor is facing the number one spark plug terminal. Unconnect and designate electrical connectors on the distributor. Indicate the distributor base just below the tip of the rotor and parallel to it and also the distributor base and the cylinder head to ensure proper reinstallation. In case there are collar bolts loosen these without removing. Unscrew the distributor hold-down bolt and directly remove the distributor ensuring that you do not twist the crankshaft. To install it, in case the crankshaft has moved, find Top Dead Center (TDC) on the number one piston and install the distributor and rotor. Install a new O-ring on distributor housing and position the cut out section of the coupling in the groove of the housing. Install the distributor into the engine as it had been when it was taken out. In case it does not fit, reposition the marks again to fit in and make sure that the rotor fits in the mark. Install loosely the distributor hold-down bolt(s), the distributor cap, and reconnect the electrical connectors. Lastly, adjust the ignition timing and tighten the distributor hold-down bolt.
