Mazda Protege Ignition Coil

The Mazda Protege Ignition Coil converts the humble feed of the 12-volt battery in the car into a huge voltage that has the strength to leap through the spark plug gap and ignite the fuel mixture, which allows the engine to start and operate effectively. The primary windings consist of thick coils made of epoxy or plastic that close around an iron core, which forms a magnetic field, and when current is switched by the ECU or the breaker points, it causes the magnetic field to collapse and increases the voltage by thousands or even tens of thousands of volts. The early Mazda vehicles had a single coil with a distributor, and therefore when it broke down the engine was switched off, whereas the new models had distributorless packs of two or more coils firing two cylinder pairs in a waste spark design. The new models fit the coil directly onto each plug, known as coil on plug, eliminating high tensile leads and providing timing accuracy for cleaner burning. Although both designs have the same mission, the single unit requires a rotor, the pack distributes the work among pairing the designation of the cylinders, and the coil on plug offers control of each. Insulation can be cracked due to heat, vibration, old plugs, or high resistance wires, and the Ignition Coil is overworked, leading to misfires, rough idle, weak power, and a warning light. Periodic plug service is one of the ways a Mazda keeps coil stress low, and an irregularity can be compared with a meter or scope to check resistance and waveforms with specifications. Converting low voltage into a lightning-like burst at the right time, each Mazda engine, including classic sedans and all types of Protege, relies upon its Ignition Coil to provide consistent combustion.

Mazda Protege Ignition Coil Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What steps should be taken to check the ignition system and replace ignition coils on Mazda Protege?
    A:
Check ignition system by cranking the engine and also a strong blue spark at the coil or at the spark plug wire. On models since the year 1994, with no spark, unplug the connector to the ignition coil and confirm that there is a battery voltage on the positive terminal with the ignition switch on. In case of zero voltage, check the main fuse, ignition switch and wiring harness. Test the primary coil winding resistance using an ohmmeter, if out of specification replace coil. Measure Coil winding resistance of secondary coil. Likewise, replace coil in case of need. In 1995-1998 models, do ignition system tests and remove the 3-pin connector off Distributor, on 1995 models and 1996 1.5L DOHC California models. Check the primary and secondary coil resistances; substitute the distributor where above specifications. To check the resistances of the 1996 models (except 1.5L DOHC California) and all 1997 models, remove the 7-pin connector and measure resistances as above, as required, changing the distributor. To 1999 and subsequent models, disconnect the fuel pump relay and test secondary spark with a spark tester on the plug wires. Measure resistance on both coil-packs and change on test failure. Depending on the model, the coil replacement may be different; 1994 and older be replace the coil, 1995-1998 replace the entire distributor (distributor assembly), unbolt and disconnect coil-packs (1999) and 1999-2001 and 2001-2003 (1.6L and 2.0L, respectively) have all coils mounted to spark plugs. Disconnect the negative battery cable, take off the heat shield, label and remove wires off the coil terminals, and take off mounting screws. In the case of 1.6L and 2.0L DOHC engines, lift the coil carefully in an upright position to prevent damages. Removal is reversed in order to be installed.
