The proper positioning of the headlights is important to avoid blinding the vehicles approaching it and to have maximum visibility on the road. Checks on proper aim should be done on a regular basis every 12 months or when a new headlight is installed or when the front-end body work is performed. In 1994 and older models there are two adjustment screws in the front of the headlight housing, one of them work on the left-and-right axis, the other on the up-and-down axis, and both can be accessed when the combination light is detached and the hood is open. Later models in 1995 onward have the screws placed in the middle of the screw and nearest to the fender, which can be accessed at the rear of the headlight housing. In order to start fine tuning 1994 and older headlights, a blank wall, masking tape and a flat floor are required with vertical tape positioned along the center of the vehicle and horizontal tape positioned along the headlights. The car must be parked 25 feet away with the appropriate tire pressure, half-full gas tank and without any heavy load. In low beams, high intensive zone must be two inches under and on the right of horizontal line whereas in high beams of the beam must be in the middle and right below horizontal line. In the case of 1995 models and beyond, make sure that the car is on a flat surface with the right amount of air in the tires and no extra load, then rock the vehicle and then use the screwdriver to adjust the headlights to make the aiming bubbles fall within two lines of O. Headlight adjustment should be done by a dealer service department as soon as possible.

How to remove the headlight assembly on Mazda Protege?

Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the front combination light retaining screw(s), disconnect the combination light bulb electrical connector, and pull the combination light assembly off the vehicle. Remove the headlight bulb electrical connector and the headlight bulb. Take out the headlight assembly side mounting bolt, which is accessible with the combination light off the vehicle, and remove the front mounting bolt near the grille. For 1997 and 1998 models, the grille must be removed before the headlight housing; for 1999 and later models, the front bumper cover must be removed. For 1994 and earlier models, remove the fastener behind the headlight assembly, while for 1995 and later models, remove the nut at the top of the headlight assembly and take out the headlight assembly. For 1994 and earlier models, remove the lower grille molding fasteners and the lower grille molding. Finally, remove the headlight housing assembly, and installation is the reverse of removal.
