Mazda Protege Valve Cover

The Mazda Protege Valve Cover is a protective cap that covers the cylinder head, which holds the engine oil for the valvetrain, keeping dust and debris out. The Valve Cover is made of lightweight plastic or heavy metal, and it consists of a gasket that is molded into shape and a ring of bolts to form a leak-free system, allowing the pumps to fill the cam area with lubricant without a drop falling out. Mazda has over the years had two primary material options; weight-saving plastic, which is cheaper, and heavier bronze or steel components that could be painted, chrome plated, or cast with cooling fins and engine script. Both of them have the mounts for the PCV valve, breather cap, and oil filler, but they vary in durability because the metal style is not prone to heat distortion, and plastic may break when the temperature peaks. Since Mazda engines are designed so that the seal works to keep the engines lubricated, a hardened gasket or a distorted covering soon leaves oil pools on the block, decreases the dipstick reading, and may even drip onto a hot manifold. In a Mazda, a quick attention job will have the vehicle running clean, and in a Protege it only takes a few hoses and wires to be moved; simply lift the old lid, scrape away the brittle rubber, clean the mating surfaces, apply sealant only where recommended, and tighten the fasteners to specification to ensure the refurbished Valve Cover holds the pressure and prevents future leakages. The everyday driver will be spared unnecessary engine wear.

Mazda Protege Valve Cover Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the valve cover on Mazda Protege?
    A:
In order to take off the valve cover, one should first disconnect the negative cable of the battery and take off PCV valve and breather hoses attached to the valve cover. In the case of SOHC models, de-bolt the spark plug wires out of the clips and un-bolt the two upper bolts of the timing belt cover loosening the lower ones, and then de-bolt the valve cover bolts. Take off the valve cover of the Cylinder Head, with the assistance of a rubber mallet, and examine the gasket as to injury. In DOHC models, remove the spark plug cables and in 1999 and later models, remove ignition coil-packs. In models up to 1998, disconnect the distributor, but do not disconnect the spark plug cables. Removal of upper timing belt cover bolts and then the valve cover bolts on a 1.8L DOHC engine, detaching the tubing where necessary. To install in SOHC models, wipe the groove on the valve cover in case a new gasket is being installed, rub silicone sealant and push the new gasket in place. When using the gasket again, then be sure to clean the groove and the gasket and apply the sealant and resemble. Handily place the valve cover, then place the bolts and firmly screw in few steps to the recommended torque. To install DOHC models, be sure that the mating surfaces are clean with a gasket scraper provided there is the presence of silicone sealant. Install the valve cover, the bolts and screw them in the proper order and procedure. Lastly, replace any parts that are still missing and run the engine to eliminate any oil leakages.
