Mazda Protege Oil Pan

The Mazda Protege Oil Pan is applied as the standard oil tank that is part of the engine, which holds the essential oil in a secure reservoir until pumped up by the oil pump. The pan, which is located just beneath the crankcase, is the central part of a wet sump system, the arrangement applied in all Mazda compact sedans throughout their production life. Under this system, the oil would drain by gravity into the pan after being circulated through the block, and the pickup tube would pump it back under pressure into the simple loop, which would offer a cooling effect, reduction of friction and noise damping. There is a second design known as a dry sump, where additional pumps are applied to remove oil from the crankcase and store it in a separate tank, a design popular with race cars since it eliminates starvation due to the g-forces pushing the liquid out of the pickup, and it also allows the engine to be lower in the car, lowering its center of gravity. Mazda decided to use the well-tested wet sump in daily driving and compromised in a few areas, including a higher engine position and the potential of the slick oil to slosh during hard cornering, situations that cannot possibly damage a normal Protege. The simple stamped steel basin has remained the same throughout the years with a drain plug to allow easy service, and a gasketed flange to keep out leaks. Due to its robust design and simple maintenance, the Oil Pan does not need much attention but quietly makes sure that every Mazda power plant is constantly lubricated. This Oil Pan is a reliable bowl that is positioned in a low-profile location beneath the chassis.

Mazda Protege Oil Pan Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the oil pan on Mazda Protege?
    A:
Removal of the oil pan: the first step in the removal process is to disconnect the negative cable of the battery, put the parking brake on, block the rear wheels and place jackstands securely underneath the front of the vehicle. The engine under cover splash shield(s) should be removed under the engine, empty the engine oil and oil filter removed. Unscrew the exhaust pipe off the Exhaust Manifold and then remove the oil pan without damaging the mating surfaces. In the case of 1.6L SOHC models, you can check whether the oil pan is one or two part and in the case that the oil pan is two parts, take out the oil pan stiffener then dislodge the oil pan. In 1.8L SOHC and 1.8L and 2.0L DOHC engines, take up the same steps to take out the oil pan and MBSP. With 1.5L DOHCs, all that is required is to take out the oil pan bolts and the pan. At installation time, be sure to cleanse the mating surfaces and remove all old gasket material, inspect the oil strainer and the oil pan flange. Install the silicone sealant to the related parts, attach the MBSP and the oil pan, and screw the bolts to the indicated tightness. It would take about 12 hours to allow the silicone sealant to cure and then start the engine and then examine whether there is any leakage of oil.
