Mazda RX-7 Clutch Slave Cylinder

The Mazda RX-7 Clutch Slave Cylinder makes the rotary sports car change its gears smoothly and reliably by converting the pressure on the pedal into hydraulic motion which disengages the clutch to enable the car to change its gears safely. This Mazda Clutch Slave Cylinder operates in conjunction with the clutch master cylinder to spray pressurized brake fluid into a small piston which then pushes a rod against the release fork, disengaging the clutch disc and flywheel whenever the pedal is pressed. In all Mazda hydraulic clutch applications this mechanism substitutes for massive mechanical connections, reducing weight and providing lighter pedal effort and more precise pedal response. The component is based on the concept of brake design, whereby the same kind of reservoir is applied to draw fluid, and the flexible high-pressure hoses are applied in such a manner that the suspension and steering movements never pull on the line. The early RX-7 models were quite typical of the cars of that time in that the first generation came with mechanical linkage, while the later generations came with the hydraulic type, the only difference being that the closed fluid circuit automatically adjusts itself to wear and also prevents vibrations in the cabin. Detection of soft pedal, low fluid, or visible seepage means there is wear in the seals of the unit that might be causing air to enter, and lower pressure is the likely reason behind this occurrence. By maintaining a clean, leak-free and thoroughly bled Clutch Slave Cylinder, the factory pedal feel is retained, as well as Mazda two-circuit hydraulic safety guidelines, which protect against complete loss of clutch.

Mazda RX-7 Clutch Slave Cylinder Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service the Clutch Slave Cylinder on Mazda RX-7?
    A:
Clutch slave cylinder is located behind the engine and just above the oil filter, and is to be maintained in case of any leakage or air getting into the clutch hydraulic system and is usually checked when the master cylinder is being serviced since failure of one normally means that there is another problem with the other. The slave cylinder is easily changed to a rebuilt slave cylinder or can be overhauled and reassembled. Firstly cover the fenders and cowling parts to avoid the damage of hydraulic fluid. Take out the two bolts that lock the slave cylinder to the transmission, and pull aside the wiring harness. Push the cylinder forward to release it off the release fork so that the flexible hose may be disconnected. Prepare a jar or rags to receive excess fluid and do not drop the crush washer in the hose connector so that the paint is not splashed onto the painted surfaces. Insert the plug of the end of the flexible hose to avoid leaks and entry of dirt; and then take out the slave cylinder of the engine compartment. Installation may be performed by firstly attaching the flexible fluid hose to the cylinder and fitting the connector firmly, with the crush washer intact. Install the release bark and insertion of the release rod on the release fork then fit and screw in the two attaching bolts. Lastly, re-run the wiring harness and perform the act of bleeding the hydraulic system of the clutch.
  • Q: What steps should be taken when disassembling the Clutch Slave Cylinder and how can the necessary replacement parts be obtained on Mazda RX-7?
    A:
When the clutch slave cylinder is supplied, or even just removed, certain parts are to be replaced as a routine, and the overhaul kits of clutch slave cylinder available in auto parts shops and even in Mazda dealerships include the required parts of replacement, and therefore this kit must be bought before disassembling it. 1. To start with, empty all the fluids in the cylinder and wipe the exterior with clean alcohol or brake fluid but not gasoline or kerosene. Then use your fingers to remove the dust boot and the release rod and turn the cylinder upside down and allow the piston and cup assembly to fall out followed by the spring. Take out the bleed nipple and the rubber cap using a proper wrench and then wash all the components with clean alcohol or brake fluid. Inspect the cylinder bore and piston, and find out whether there is wear, roughness or scoring, and change where these signs are present. Careful to clean out the bleed nipple port and to remove any obstructions, and check the clearance between the cylinder bore and the piston with a feeler gauge; a clearance above the limit requires replacement of the piston or cylinder. Lastly, replace the clutch slave cylinder using the new components in the overhaul kit and assemble the clutch slave cylinder components but without putting the piston and cups back in the cylinder.
