Mazda RX-7 Flywheel

The Mazda RX-7 Flywheel is made to provide the reversal of power flow, operation of the engine, and a high-quality surface to operate a clutch. This heavy steel disc is bolted to the end of the Mazda rotary crankshaft, and it spins each time the engine is started; the stored inertia averages the uneven pulses of combustion into a smooth flow that can be absorbed by the transmission. As the driver turns the key, the starter motor engages its small gear with the gear on the perimeter, and the crank turns to allow air and fuel to be drawn into the engine and ignited. Meanwhile, the face of the disc doubles as one half of the clutch coupling, which provides the clutch plate with a friction surface and a home for the pressure plate. Original Mazda RX-7 models were based on a plain solid unit, although in some markets subsequent models were fitted with a dual mass Flywheel, which surrounds springs between the front and back masses to dampen vibration and make gear changes appear more effortless. The dual design is also great at damping but cannot be resurfaced if the contact area of the clutch is scored or the internal springs become loose, hence replacement is the only solution. It is sometimes possible to machine a solid rotor to eliminate hotspots or warpage, although only a shallow layer needs to be skimmed; greater wear, deep grooves, or damaged ring gear teeth will normally warrant a replacement part. It is also important to know which Flywheel your Mazda sports car has so that the owner can decide on the service route when clutch engagement becomes rough or starting noises indicate a ring gear problem.

Mazda RX-7 Flywheel Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to install the flywheel and counterweight on the eccentric shaft on Mazda RX-7?
    A:
Apply engine oil to the oil seal in the rear housing, then fit the key onto the eccentric shaft. Install the flywheel onto the eccentric shaft and apply sealing agent to both sides of the flywheel lockwasher before placing it in position over the end of the eccentric shaft. Use a thread locking agent like "Loctite" on the threads of the eccentric shaft and install the nut, tightening it to a torque of 289 to 362 ft-lb (40 to 50 m-kg). If a torque wrench does not read this high, a length of pipe can be used to achieve the necessary torque; for example, applying 100 pounds of torque 3½ feet from the nut will yield approximately 350 pounds. A flywheel brake may be needed to prevent the flywheel from turning during this process. Bend up the lockwasher against one of the flat spots on the nut using a chisel or screwdriver to secure it. For automatic transmissions, install the counterweight in the same manner with the same torque specifications, ensuring the drive plate hole aligns with the hole in the counterweight, positioning the key for the counterweight in a straight line towards the bottom of the engine and the ears of the counterweight towards the top, then align the drive plate hole with the top mounting hole.
