Mazda RX-7 Fan Clutch

The Fan Clutch on the Mazda RX-7 serves to regulate the engine cooling fan by controlling its speed in order to pull air through the radiator. This thermostatic device engages with the water pump pulley and drives a belt from the crankshaft. Such a layout is typical of a longitudinal engine installation such as the Mazda RX-7. When the engine coolant temperatures are lower, it allows the fan to freewheel, preventing the load on the engine. Thus, the engine can warm up faster. As heat accumulates, a bi-metal gadget moves a viscous fluid contained in the housing, locking the assembly so that the fan turns with the pulley and pulls cooler outside air through the radiator core. The flow of air causes a reduction in the temperature of the coolant before it gets cycled back into the block. It maintains stable heat operation while driving in various conditions. When the temperature goes down, the shear imposed on the fluid will go down, and the coupling will slip. The fan speed will fall again to save power. The engagement of the Fan Clutch at lower temperatures allows more engine power for acceleration. It does not require any input from the driver and lessens noise, drag, and fuel consumption. This part matches airflow to thermal need to safeguard the rotary engine present in Mazda RX-7 models and ensures consistent performance during idle, stop-and-go, and high-speed highway runs. The Fan Clutch is a critical component that connects the cooling system to overall driveability, allowing Mazda's operating efficiency to remain within specified limits, making it reliable for everyday use.

Mazda RX-7 Fan Clutch Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
How to remove and reassemble the Fan Clutch attached to the water pump pulley on Mazda RX-7?
    A:
The fan assembly is fitted to the Water Pump pulley on the front side of the engine. Starting with the four bolts that hold the fan assembly to the flange on the water pump pulley; remove the assembly out of the radiator cowling and the engine compartment. In case this is too troublesome, remove the cowling on the sides of the radiator and raise it a bit so that it clears. The next step is to loosen up the four bolts connecting the fan with the fan clutch and take apart the two parts. To reassemble, attach the fan clutch to the fan and attach the assembly to the flange on the water pump pulley.
