Mazda RX-7 Radiator

The Mazda RX-7 Radiator cools the engine to prevent the rotary engine from overheating and transfers heat to the flowing air as quickly as possible. It is actually a fin and tube heat exchanger mounted behind the grille in the nose of the car, which allows pumps to force the hot antifreeze out of the block through narrow aluminum tubes while thin fins draw the heat toward the airflow generated by vehicle velocity and an electric fan. This rapid convection action instead of actual radiation dispersion expands the enormous surface area and thus the temperature decreases before the liquid reenters the engine. Over the years of production, Mazda employed the same principle while trying different materials. Heavy copper brass Radiator designs were available in earlier cars, and the designs were valued for their heavy soldered seams, but later generations abandoned the heavy cores in favor of lighter aluminum cores attached to plastic or aluminum tanks to reduce weight and cost without any significant efficiency loss. The general layout of whatever style was employed in any particular Mazda was the same; there was an inlet tank on one side, an outlet tank on the other side, and a tightly packed core in between. Leakage (usually due to corrosion or impact) is the highly dangerous issue to any Radiator; small holes may be patched in the immediate time, but full replacement may be essential to ensure full cooling efficiency. Frequent flushes make sure that the minerals are washed away to allow the heat to transfer more quickly, thus ensuring that all Mazdas run continuously at cool temperatures, regardless of whether the car enthusiast behind the wheel is driving an old RX-7 or a new Mazda rotary icon.

Mazda RX-7 Radiator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How is the radiator removed and reinstalled in the engine compartment on Mazda RX-7?
    A:
The radiator placed on the front of the engine compartment with different oil cooler at the bottom. It may be detached or it may be removed with the oil cooler, in which case two oil hoses need to be disconnected and plugged to avoid the loss of the fluid. In the top of the radiator are the bullet connector of the coolant level sensor, which needs to be disconnected and the wiring needs to be pulled off. Water hose contained between the radiator cap and the Coolant Reservoir should be removed and shifted aside. Four bolts that hold the fan to the water pump pulley must be removed and the use of the flange may be necessary to stop the fan turning. The fan can be detached or installed in the radiator cowling to be easily removed together with the radiator. The engine under-cover should be removed in order to reach the engine. The bottom radiator hose is to be unclamped to drain the coolant bending it out of the installation. The heater hose will need to be disconnected at the bottom part (nipple) of the radiator hose, and the top part of radiator hose will also need to be disconnected and moved aside. In the case of cars with automatic transmission, the hoses of oil at the bottom of the radiator must be taken out. Four bolts and one nut screwing the radiator and shroud assemblies to the support system needs to be removed and should the radiator be being removed with no oil cooler, the bolts connecting the cooler to the radiator should be removed. The radiator, shroud and fan assembly may then be removed out of the engine compartment. Radiator must be checked the details of leaks may be repaired with the help of soldering or it may be replaced when it is too much. The outside ought to be swept with compressed air where possible. Radiator is to be installed with shroud and fan assembly attached and the bolts at the oil cooler brackets and support system should be bounded loosely and then tightened. In the case of vehicles that use automatic transmission the fluid hoses are to be re-fit and the upper and the lower radiator hose led in and the clamps firmly tightened. There should also be the connection of the heater hose in the lower right radiator. The fan assembly must be connected to the water pump pulley using four bolts and the hose of the coolant recovery tank ought to be connected to the radiator, as does the coolant level sensor lead. The under-cover engine must be fitted by fitting it into the crossmember and bolting it on the front and sides. A 50/50 blend of soft water and ethylene glycol base antifreeze should be filled in the radiator and radiator top fitted. Lastly, the engine is to be started to ensure there are no leaks and the amount of coolant is checked after covering a few miles.
