Mazda RX-7 Instrument Cluster Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
How to remove and reinstall the main instrument cluster on Mazda RX-7?
    A:
The instrument cluster that is located in the dashboard just opposite the driver is called the main instrument cluster. Whenever any gauge or warning light needs servicing, this panel must be removed. First, disconnect the negative battery cable. Then reach up under the dash and disconnect the speedometer cable. This cable is secured in place with a plastic clip. Just push the tang and pull straight out. First, then remove the steering wheel and pull off the light switch knob from the shaft, as it has no retaining set screws. To remove the steering column cover under the steering column, take note of the different types and lengths of screws. To dislodge the main cover that conceals the combination switch, simply pop out the small hole cover indicator that is secured by tangs. At the top of the instrument panel, remove the two screws of a cover and gently pull it out at the bottom without distorting it. When the trim cover is off, you'll see two screws for the instrument panel. Remove them and the two others on either side of the steering column, then pull the assembly out slightly. To remove the instrument panel from the vehicle, disconnect the 2 keyed multiple connectors at the rear of the panel. Installation should be performed with assembly close to the dash for connector plug-in, which will be otherwise keyed. Tightening all four screws fully, push the unit fully in and install screws loose. Snap the trim cover into position at the bottom clips and install the two top screws. If the trim cover is difficult to secure in the centre, use a little glue or double-faced tape to hold it in place. Pass the cover for the column over the combination switch handle and snap over the small hole cover for tightening the screws of the column cover. Firmly push the light switch knob onto the shaft, then install the steering wheel and cap with a new nylon-insert lock nut, and reach under the dash to connect the speedometer cable using the locking tab. Finally, reattach the negative battery cable.
