The cable is to be detached by first disconnecting the cable to the negative terminal of the battery and then lastly connecting it to the tool is used to loosen the cable clamps; even when changing the cable to the positive terminal, this should be done by disconnecting the negative cable. Disconnect the old cables to the battery, trace each until it reaches the opposite end, and loosen them, taking note of the path taken by each cable in order to install them correctly. When buying new cables it is important to have the old cables as well since it is important to ensure that they are replaced with the same parts. Wipe the threads of the solenoid or ground connection with a wire brush to remove rust and other corrosion and put a small amount of battery terminal corrosion inhibitor or petroleum jelly on the threads to prevent any further corrosion. Connect the cable to either the solenoid or ground connection, screw the mounting nut or bolt. Twist a new cable in order to make sure that it is not stretched to the battery post before attaching the cable to the battery.
