The parking brake systems have undergone changes over the years the 2012 and recent ones have rear drum brakes, which consist of a cable that pulls a lever inside the drum which extends the brake shoes and the 2008 and earlier ones are based on the drum-in-hat design, this uses a cable that pulls a lever inside the drum, which expands the brake shoes. Otherwise, cable actuation of the rear brakes is achieved by the use of actuators on the rear caliper pistons in 2013 and later models. This is a manual parking brake system that puts a strain on the cables that are attached to the parking brake lever and the rear brake parts and a light will be on the dashboard when the parking brake is engaged. Under moderate force, the parking brake lever should move through three to five clicks; more than five may mean that it is not completely clear, whereas less than three may mean that it does not provide adequate holding force on slopes. In 2007 and previous models, the lever to the parking brake should be released and the boot should be removed to get to the adjustment nut, which should be then turned until the lever makes the required number of clicks. Earlier models in 2008 and onwards 2012 have an automatic adjuster that removes the process of having to adjust the cable manually. To lift the tension within the parking brake cables to replace the cables, an assistant must pull down the cable union and a pin must be inserted to ensure that there is no tension when taking the cables off. In the case of 2013 and subsequent models, it involves two individuals, where the car is hoisted and held firmly. Once the center console trim has been pulled off and the factory media hub is removed, the parking brake should be released to the fullest extent, and the locking nut and the adjustment nut should be loosened. The distance between the parking brake lever and the brake caliper abutment should then be measured with a feeler gauge, with the same being set to 0.027 inch (0.7 mm) on either side, then the cable nut should be adjusted and the locking nut tightened with the installation procedure being the reverse of that.
