1989 Mazda 929 Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the rear crankshaft seal on 1989 Mazda 929?
A: In 1979-82 626s and GLC, to change the rear main oil seal, the engine can be left in place during a seal change, but it has to be removed during a seal and rear main bearing change. Start by removing the transmission/transaxle, then in manual models the pressure plate, clutch disc, and flywheel or in an automatic the driving plate. Drill two holes into the crankshaft rear oil seal and fit screws on each side of the hole and pry the seal out. Wipe the oil recess and crankshaft surface and grease the seal surfaces with oil and grease and install the new seal. Manual models should have the flywheel and pressure plate replaced, and automatic models should have the driving plate followed by the transmission/transaxle. In 323 and 1983-87 626 models, a seal installer and arbor press are suggested in the new seal installing process, which requires removing the rear cover and the transaxle. Wipe the new seal with oil and push it into the rear cover and re screw the cover with a given amount of torque. On 1988-89 626/MX6 models, disconnect battery, remove transaxle and rear oil pan-to-seal housing bolts and clean up surfaces then press new seal into housing and reinstall with new gaskets. In the case of the 929, lift up the car, take out transmission, empty oil, and take off the rear main seal cover to change the seal, but to make sure to apply clean engine oil before forcing the seal into the cover and screwing the holding bolts.
