1990 Mazda B2200 Control Arm Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the lower control arm on 1990 Mazda B2200?
A: The control arms can only be found in the MPV and B Series Pick-up models. In order to take out the lower control arm of a pickup, hoist and assist the car and then take out the wheel and tire assembly. Place the jack under the lower control arm, take out the cotter pin and nut on the lower ball joint stud and part the ball joint and the knuckle with the right tool. The second step includes removing the shock absorber of the lower control arm, the torsion bar, anchor arm and the torque plate assembly and also, extracting the bolts and nuts that hold the lower control arm together with the frame. On 2WD cars, also take off the tension rod bolts. Unscrew the stabilizer bar at the lower control arm then use your fingers to remove the lower control arm. To install, insert the lower control arm into the frame and put the bolts and nuts but do not tighten them. Install the torsion bar, anchor arm and torque plate assembly back and tighten the tension rod bolt in 2wd cars. Install the stabilizer bar and shock absorber and then fit in the wheel and tire assembly followed by lowering the vehicle. Unladen vehicle Install the lower control arm-to-frame bolts and nuts to specifications, and verify the vehicle ride height and front end alignment. With the rear-wheel-driven MPV, one has to raise the body, take off the brake caliper, disconnect the compression rod and stabilizer bar, and fully detach the tie rod end and strut to the knuckle. Once the lower control arm has been removed, the installation process proceeds in a similar fashion making sure that all parts are tightened to required torque. In the case of 4-wheel drive models, the process involves dismounting the stabilizer bar and lower ball joint and thereafter getting the bottom control arm out with approved torque requirements before reattaching it with the right torque requirements. Rear-wheel drive MPV and all B Series Pick-up models have control arm bushings in the rear not serviced separately; should they be required, the complete upper control arm front of the suspension should be changed. In the case of 4WD MPV, the lower control arm needs to be taken out and this has to be done in a bench vise and the bushings need to be changed using specific tools and methods.
