1997 Mazda MPV Cylinder Head Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What precautions should be taken before beginning the cylinder head replacement procedure on 1997 Mazda MPV?
A: Precaution: Before commencing this, make sure that the engine is cold. At Top Dead Center set the number one piston in position and detach the negative cable with the battery. Cooling system Drain system and remove spark plugs. Disassemble the intake and exhaust manifolds; unless solely changing the cylinder head gasket, the manifolds do not have to be removed, though one may require some help to lift the head out of the engine, should they be attached. Take off the valve cover, distributor together with the cap and wires. Install a tensioner locking tool to ensure the chain and tensioner is firmly secured as the cylinder head is removed off the engine but ensure it is firmly fixed to ensure that the tensioner does not just pop out. Unbolt the camshaft sprocket on the camshaft. Tighten the head bolts in 1/4 turns steps until they can be turned by hand then continue the reverse of the ordering of tightening to prevent head warping and record where each bolt fits to be put back. Carefully remove the head off the engine by inserting something between the protrusions of the casting in the event of resistance, and place the head on blocks of wood to avoid damaging gasket surfaces. The disassembly and inspection process of the cylinder head is a significant process and it is recommended to ensure that it is checked whether it is warped even when only the gasket is being replaced. When installing the cylinder head, the block and cylinder head mating surfaces should be absolutely clean, scrape off all evidence of carbon and old gasket material with a gasket scraper, clean with lacquer thinner or acetone. Make sure that there is no oil on the mating surfaces to prevent sealing problems. Stuff the cylinders with clean shop rags to keep out debris and vacuum clean the cylinders to clean out whatever falls into the cylinders taking care not to break the aluminum head. Examine the block and head mating surfaces, looking after nicks and scratches; minor damage can be removed by a file, and more severe damage might necessitate machining. Chase the threads in the holes of the head bolts with a tap of what size fits the holes, and die down the threads of all of the head bolts to eliminate corrosion. Install a new gasket on the block, and the markings showing where the block is to be installed should be positioned facing UP and the edges of the timing chain cover should be sealed with a sealant material before positioning the cylinder head. Lubricate cylinder head bolt threads and seats then screw the bolts in a particular order in three steps and tighten them to a certain torque. Install the camshaft sprocket on the camshaft and get rid of the tensioner locking tool. Install the rest of the parts in the order in which they were removed, refill the cooling system and confirm all fluid levels. Turn the crankshaft clockwise gradually by hand in two full revolutions and pause to reposition the camshaft timing in case of any resistance as the valves could be striking the pistons. Turn the engine on, set the ignition timing and test run the engine up to normal operating temperature, inspecting any leaks and correct functioning.
