Q: How to remove the oil pump and crankshaft sprocket for V6 engine on 1997 Mazda MPV?
A: The timing belt and crankshaft sprocket are removed by first removing the oil pan, then the oil pump pickup tube, unbolstering the tube, brace bolt, and then unscrewing the tube. Then, take out the front cover of the engine and the oil pump-to-engine block bolts on the front of the engine. When need be, loosen the oil pump with block of wood and hammer and then remove the pump assembly by removing the pump housing bolts. Wipe the mating surfaces of the oil pump and engine block using scraping off old gasket and sealant, then cleaning the surfaces using lacquer thinner or acetone. To inspect, loosen up the screws connecting the rear cover to the oil pump, with an impact screwdriver (as necessary) then clean all parts with solvent and examine wear and damage. Unscrew the plug of the oil pressure relief valve, washer, spring, and valve and examine the surface of the slider and spring, which should not be damaged and both need to be changed in case of faultiness. Check the clearances of the oil pump (side clearance, tooth tip clearance, and outer rotor to pump body clearance) by feeler gauge and straightedge and compare the measurements with the given values. To assemble again, put the dimples of the rotors where the cover is facing, fill the cavities of the pumps with petroleum jelly to make it primed, and then put the cover on without sealant. Use thread locking compound and screw the screws and ensuring they are tight then install the oil pressure relief valve, spring, and washer screw the plug to the given torque. Lastly is installation, in the opposite order as removal, so that the flats of the crankshaft are in line with those of the inner rotor of the oil pump, and all fasteners are tightened to the required torque values.
