1997 Mazda MPV Shock Absorber Parts and Q&A
Q: How to remove and install shock absorbers on 1997 Mazda MPV?
A: To take out the shock absorbers, raise the rear of the vehicle on the jackstands and ensure that it is in position. Insert a floor jack under the axle assembly, and lift the assembly slightly to take the weight off the shock absorber bolts. In models with Automatic Leveling of the loads, remove the air line fitting of the shock absorber. The next step is to loosen the shock-to-axle bolt and nut to remove the upper part of the shock out of the frame and then to unbolt the shock-to-body nut to remove the lower part of the shock out of the axle housing. Lastly, take away the shock absorber. To check, stand every shock on end and pump in and out several times, taking care they move smoothly, without binding or dead spots, and to look the shocks leak, and always take off any that leak, and having removed them, always put off a pair. Installation To install, place each shock, and install the bolts and adjust the jack to align the lower bolt holes. Once all the upper and lower mounting bolts are in place, lift the jack to a position that represents normal ride height and tighten the nuts. In case the vehicle has Automatic Load Leveling, reconnect and firmly tighten the air line fittings then check after a short test drive whether there is any air leakage by applying soapy water solution.
