Camshaft lobe is straight up, i.e. the measurement is taken between the base circle of the camshaft lobe and the top of the lifter with feeler gauges measuring the clearances. The distance between each cam's lob and its respective lifter must be measured and notes carefully recorded for each lifter's measurement. Should any measurement fall outside the recommended clearances, remove the camshafts and replace the out-of-spec lifters. New lifters of various thicknesses are available to make the valve clearances correct. Each is marked with a number that indicates thickness. Specifically, only the numbers after the decimal are relevant: for example, a "0.650" marking refers to an actual thickness of 3.650 mm. The desired thickness of the new lifters is determined by adding the thickness of the original lifter to the measured clearance. From this figure subtract the midrange for the ideal clearance. This will give the proper lifter thickness to order. Not every thickness is available so pick the closest. Following the installation of the camshafts and
Timing Chain, one should recheck the valve clearances. Moreover, the procedure for fitting the timing chain is the reverse of removal. Subsequently, run the engine, and check for oil leaks.
