- Q: How to remove the Timing Chain, Timing Chain Tensioner and Timing Cover on Mazda 3?A:The timing chain cover can be removed by firstly disconnecting the negative battery terminal by first removing the battery cover. Unscrew the water pump pulleys bolts and take out the drive belt, drive belt idler pulley and the water pump pulley. The second step is to take the crankshaft pulley off making sure that the engine does not leave TDC. Removal of the upper engine cover: Lift off the engine cover uppermost on the mounting posts and disconnect the electrical connector of Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor, and remove the sensor, remember that sensor needs to be replaced every time. Access the engine by lifting it at the top and lift it so that one can take off the Engine Mount to the right and should one be required, loosen the mounting bracket and lay aside the power steering hoses. Take off the timing chain cover by removing the crankshaft front oil seal then the bolts. Installation requires reversal of the removal instructions with the note to clean all surfaces of the parts of the sealant mating, installing the engine cover within the four minutes following the application of RTV sealant, tightening the bolts in sequence to the recommended torque, and fitting a new CKP sensor with the alignment tool without tightening the mounting bolts of the sensor. In order to strip the timing chain and tensioner, you have to remove the timing chain cover, then pull the ratchet arm of the tensioner couple of inches away by the ratchet stem and press the tensioner piston by pushing on it using a pin. In the event that the ratchet requires resetting, put the tensioner in the vise, release the tension and put the ratchet back in place. Disassemble the tensioner mounting bolts and tensioner, the loose timing chain guide and timing chain. The camshaft sprockets and guide to the left chain may be removed in case of necessity. To install, first remove the camshaft alignment tool (unless it was already installed), loosen the camshaft sprocket bolts but do not remove them and then install the left chain guide (unless removed). Next, place the timing chain and the right chain guide, the timing chain tensioner, screw the fastensers and then eliminate the pin to connect the chain guide. Tighten the bolts of the camshaft sprocket and install the camshaft alignment tool again, when doing so, do not depend on the alignment tool. Lastly, the timing chain cover could be fitted.
