Mazda 3 Hood Release Cable

The Mazda 3 Hood Release Cable allows drivers to open the hood fast when in need of some maintenance, and leave the latch firmly closed on the road. This fine steel strand is connected to the interior release handle, and then, running forward to a little junction block behind the hood, is connected with secondary lines leading to all latch handles, so that a single pull will unlock both sides simultaneously. During decades of cold and hot seasons and engine bay vibrations, the sheath may crack, water will creep in and corrosion will spread until the cable sticks or snaps, and the hood gets lodged. When that occurs replacement is the only feasible solution because rarely can lubrication be applied to restore strength or pliability. The first generation versions applied a single continuous cable, but the split as above is more widespread, and is much easier to service, especially on individual sections, and to stretch over time, but both types have the same objective and failure modes. The Mazda latch which does not unlock can be prevented by replacing it proactively before it fails. All Mazda 3 owners must keep in mind that a damaged Hood Release Cable may postpone necessary engine inspections such as oil or coolant, hence a healthy Hood Release Cable keeps larger investments safe. Installation of a new Hood Release Cable requires matching the routes applied by the factory to prevent creating sharp turns that reduce the life span and provide a clean installation with the cabin lever going into the latch. This minor bit has a disproportionate role to play in the day to day trustworthiness of Mazda 3 drivers.

Mazda 3 Hood Release Cable Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the hood latch and hood release cable on Mazda 3?
    A:
In order to replace the hood latch the first step is to unscrew the cable of the negative battery terminal, and in 2010 and later models the hood latch switch connector. Draw a line around the latch to line up and then remove the retaining bolts that hold the latch to the radiator support and remove the latch. Be careful the airbag front crash sensor is attached using the same mounting bolt as the hood latch, do not hit or drop the sensor to avoid damaging the sensor and will deploy the airbag. The next step is to raise the cable out of the bracket and out of the latch assembly to disconnect the cable end plug. In case of the release cable, the upper engine cover is removed by pushing it off the mounting posts by its two sides. Next, loosen the battery air inlet fasteners, air inlet, battery and battery tray. Unclips: Disconnect the release cable of the hood latch and remove the release cable clips off the Fender and the wiring harness. To release the locking tab, pull the release handle down (you have to hold a small screwdriver to press the tab down) and then, now that the locking tab is released, pull the handle up and out of the instrument panel and then unscrew the release cable off the release handle and pull it through the firewall. Removal is the opposite of the installation process.
