Mazda 3 Spark Plug

It is the Mazda 3 Spark Plug that gives the engine the very first shot of fire that lights the air-fuel mix to get the car started and running in a smooth manner. The plug, which is located in the individual gasoline cylinders, is a high-voltage wire that passes the high voltage from the ignition coil across a small open circuit between the center and the side electrode, leaping this gap like a small bolt of lightning and sparking off the mixture dozens of times every second. It is secured by a threaded metal shell and is insulated by a ceramic shield preventing the electric path through the combustion chamber from the heat and pressure, which makes Mazda engines resistant to such conditions. With time, carbon deposits, heat erosion and general wear cause the spark to become dull and the vehicle will hesitate or burn up more fuel; hence, frequent replacement will keep the vehicle with crisp performance. Multi-ground or surface-discharge formulations, which redistribute workload, extend service life and resist fouling, have been applied occasionally in the life of the Mazda line; however, all were ignited by the same means. The correct heat range and setting the correct gap are important, as the gap being too small will cause the flame kernel to become weak, and a plug that becomes either too hot or too cold may melt electrodes or result in a misfire. Since fresh units are being selected by Mazda owners, they want to keep the specification in line with what has been written so they can make sure the 3 will continue firing without fail at each Spark Plug stroke. Even routine inspection, which is called reading the Spark Plug, provides hints concerning richness of the mixture or latent mechanical problems.

Mazda 3 Spark Plug Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What are the steps and tools necessary for replacing spark plugs on Mazda 3?
    A:
The spark plugs are found at the center of the valve cover(s) and a replacement kit normally has a spark plug socket that connects to a ratchet, a range of extensions, and a gap gauge to determine and adjust the gaps in the new spark plugs. Though it is optional, a torque wrench is suggested in order to tighten the plugs accordingly. Purchasing new spark plugs beforehand and setting them to the proper gap is also recommended and changing them one at a time, not all at once, and being sure that the right type is of the right kind, not of the wrong type. You should not strip the plugs out until the engine is completely cool, otherwise you may tend to break the aluminum cylinder heads, and in the mean time, you must examine the new plugs and clean up the alignment of the openings. A proper-thickness gauge between the electrodes at the tip of the plug can be used to check the gap and a wire-type gauge is suggested in case of platinum or iridium plugs. The upper engine cover is held on by rubber grommets that should be pulled up at both ends to remove them off the mounting posts. Removal of the individual ignition coils first is necessary to access the spark plugs; this means that one has to disconnect the electrical connector and remove the coil fastening insertion and then pull the coil directly upwards. When it is available, it is possible to put clear any dirt or debris in the spark plug hole with the help of compressed air to avoid contamination when removing a plug. In order to change the spark plug, the socket of the spark plug should be placed over the spark plug and then turn in an anti-clockwise direction with the ratchet and extension. Regardless of the option to substitute or re-use the old plugs, check them to determine the state of the engine. Before attaching a new spark plug, a small portion of anti-seize compound is first applied on the threads of the spark plug then the new plug should be threaded into the fuel spray until it is no longer rotatable, then screwed on with a torque wrench or ratchet. A short piece of rubber hose on the end of the plug may also be used to thread the plug into its place without damaging the threads. Also repeat the same process with the other spark plugs.
